GRAYSON - The outcome all but decided within a few ticks following the tip, most of the drama during East’s game against Bath County last Thursday centered on senior Tawnee Tackett. Needing just nine points to eclipse the 1,000-point club, Tackett helped her club race to a huge early lead then coast to the 50-36 victory.

But back to the drama…

With each free throw or lay-up attempt, the crowd in the Holbrook Athletic Complex East held its breath. Would this be the shot? It certainly took well into the second half before the sharp-shooting center nailed her fateful three-pointer to push her past the milestone. And once she in bounded the ball, slipped behind the screen and connected from behind the arc, the apprehension gave way to happiness, cheers… and relief!

“Everybody was looking to get me the ball and I was nervous,’ Tackett told The Journal-Times.

“We have some pretty big games coming up and I didn’t want us to get out of our game plan by me trying to get there. Now it’s over and we can just go and play some ball.”

Against the Lady Cats, East Carter led 14-zip and when Tackett’s baseball throw to fellow senior Alicia Myers connected on the breakaway, coach Hager Easterling’s club was up 23-7 with 2:54 in the first.

‘Good, really well,” Myers said when asked how her club was playing at the moment. East dropped three in a row, including a lopsided loss to rival West Carter, before righting their ship at Raceland last Monday night on a buzzer-beater. “We all have each other’s back. And we’re focused and ready – no distractions.”

According to the players, that adversity seems to have got the girls playing at a higher level.

“We kind of went into that little slump, we just weren’t feelin’ it,” Brianna Buck said. “We certainly weren’t playing well and our shots weren’t falling.

“But when we won that game at Raceland, on that last-second shot, that really got us going – reignited our fire.”

East is off until hosting 62nd district foe Morgan County this Saturday, Jan. 20
