SANDY HOOK -- Elliott County led East Carter for most of last Tuesday night’s game in Sandy Hook, but unlike the two teams’ Dec. 18 meeting in which the Lions defeated the Raiders 98-66 in Grayson, Elliott County had to hold off a late charge to gain the win, 75-74.

The Lions led by as many as nine points, including as late as 72-63 with just under three minutes to play, but the Raiders staged a rally out-scoring the hosts 11-3 in the waning minutes of the contest.

A Tyler Jackson 3-pointer, and a pair of baskets from Colt Barnhill and Drew Johnson closed it to two points at 72-70. The Lions added a basket to push the margin up to four. After a Ryan Sagraves basket and an Ethan Faulkner free throw, the difference was trimmed to three and East Carter (13-4) had possession of the ball with just 18.3 seconds remaining in the game.

Jackson missed the game-tying 3-pointer and Barnhill scored off the offensive rebound as’s 13th-ranked team, Elliott County (15-1), escaped with the win.

Elliott County built an early lead, holding a 21-12 advantage at the end of the opening period, but East Carter played even the rest of the way, including out-scoring the hosts in two of the final three quarters. The Lions led 39-32 at halftime and stretched the margin up by two points at 61-52 at the end of the third period.

Johnson led all scorers with 28 points. Barnhill and Jackson also recorded double-digit points with 15 and 11, respectively. Sagraves added eight points and eight rebounds, while Devin Kawada added seven points off the bench.

Jonathan Ferguson paced the Lions with 22 points, while Ethan Faulkner and Evan Faulkner added 21 and 20, respectively. Ethan Faulkner also picked up 10 rebounds. Timmy Knipp chipped in eight points.

The Raiders returned to the court three days after the Elliott County game and defeated Morgan County 50-39, and then toppled Red Bird on Saturday 70-55.
