GRAYSON - Leading by seven points with just a few minutes remaining in the second East/West clash of the season, it looked as if West Carter would score a win in round 2 of the current campaign and straighten out what has been a difficult season. Then things got even more aggravating -- at least for the girls from Olive Hill.

East Carter rallied for the 50-48 victory on their home floor, outscoring their rivals 20-14 in the decisive final period, to make it two straight over their cross-county rivals. Hager Easterling’s Lady Raiders won big over the Lady Comets earlier this month.

The win keeps East Carter (11-8) in the thick of things atop the district rankings while West is still struggling at 4-12.

The hosts were up four points after the opening quarter, but the girls from Grayson did five better in the second to take an 18-17 lead into the lockers. Von Perry’s Lady Comets doubled up their first-half score in the third period and had the momentum and the 34-30 lead through three.

East Carter’s Brittany Dearfield paced a trio of Lady Raiders in double figures with 21 points. She shared high-point honors with West Carter’s Monica Stevens. Brianna Buck and Katherine White each put in 11 points for East. Sydnie Cox and Brittany Tackett each had eight for West. Stevens’ double double included 11 rebounds and Lakota Burge grabbed a team-best 10 boards for East. West edged East at the glass, out rebounding the visitors, 33-32.

Neither teams shot particularly well from the field with West hitting 11-35 for 31.4-percent and East managed 13-44 for 29.5-percent. The Lady Raiders attempted 16 three-pointers but made just four. The Lady Comets connected on just 2-9 from outside the arc. And with 22 total fouls called in the rivalry matchup, both teams piled up the points from the stripe. West sank 24-33 from the free throw line and East hit 20-28.

In the junior varsity girls’ game, the Lady Raiders went to 9-0 on the season with a lopsided 34-20 win. Courtney Sparks paced East with 16 points and Jessica Marshall added eight.

West Carter hosted state-ranked Montgomery County last night (Tuesday) then gets down to business in a pair of district matchups. The Lady Comets take on Lewis County this Friday, Feb. 1 in Olive Hill, then battles at Elliott County next Monday, Feb. 4.

East Carter hosts Greenup County this Thursday, Jan. 31, then battles at Rose Hill on Monday.
