OLIVE HILL - West Carter sank a dozen free throws in the final minutes of play and the Comets came up with a big 56-52 win over visiting Morgan County last Friday on John ‘Hop’ Brown Court to lock up the No. 3 seed in the upcoming 62nd District Tournament.

The way the draw shakes out, the top-ranked, and hosting, Lions of Elliott County will take on Morgan County and the clubs from East and West will square off in the other first-round matchup.

“We spend a lot of time on free throws in practice and it really paid off tonight,” Comet senior Bo Thompson, who shared team-scoring honors with Chris Barker with 15 points, told The Journal-Times about Jeremy Webb’s club’s 15-16 effort at the charity stripe.

“We shoot so many in practice… Coach wants us to be able to step up and knock ‘em down like we did.”

Trailing by three at the end of the first quarter, junior guard Matt Logan triggered a 14-4 run by the hosts. Logan scored on a put-back at 7:33 in the second then pumped in a three-pointer on a defensive rebound by Barker and West was up, 13-11.

The Cougars retook a quick lead when Jerred Smith connected from three-point range at 5:02 but that was the last time the guys from West Liberty would be in front. Thompson’s baseline jumper off an inbound play at 4:40 put the Comets up by a point. Then Thompson drilled a tirfecta for the 18-14 margin; that spread held throughout the rest of the game.

“We played good on defense, especially, and everyone contributed,” Ace Puckett said. “We come in flat sometimes and we just need to play the whole game with intensity -- we had a pretty good start tonight. We kept up the intensity with our rotation and that’s how we want it to work.”

Neither team shot particularly well (both under 39-percent) but the Comets outrebounded the Cougars and they were sharper from the stripe.

Barker and Thompson each had 15 points in the second win over Morgan County this season. Logan added nine points and Puckett picked up six. Joseph Lee and Aaron Rayburn each finished with four points and B.A. Oney added three. Barker grabbed nine rebounds and Oney dished three assists. Cameron Dunn led Morgan County with a game-best 24 points.

The 62nd District Tournament will be played in Sandy Hook, Feb. 25-29.
