West Carter Lady Comets’ softball picks up momentum.
The Lady Comets enter the last week of the regular season having beat Morgan County twice in addition to wins over Fairview and Mason County. The Lady Comets are on a four-game winning streak.
However, the regular season isn’t over yet. They will have one more big week before the postseason. They had six games scheduled starting Monday night with a district game against Elliott County.
Both teams were 2-3 in district play before the game. The Lady Comets lost both games to their rivals at East Carter, but picked up wins against Morgan County. They fell 4-2 to Elliott County the first time the two teams met.
Karianna Back took the loss to the Lady Lions. She pitched a complete game giving up four runs on six hits.
The Lady Comets scored two runs on five hits. Isabella Shavers was two-for-four at the plate. The remaining hits were made by Becca Nolen, Madison Hanshaw and Maggie Jones.
The Lady Comets and the Lady Lions will meet again in the first round of the district. The Lady Lions also lost both games against East and took a loss to Morgan County, 10-4, early in the regular season.
Tuesday night started a tough stretch for the Lady Comets. They faced Fleming County (11-13) before facing two of the 16th Region’s best teams Boyd County (20-10) and Rowan County (22-9).
The Lady Comets take on Boyd County at home Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. and play Rowan County at home Friday night at 5:30 p.m.
They have back-to-back games scheduled for this Saturday. They will play Augusta at 1 p.m. The second game will follow.
