East Carter tennis participated in Wednesday’s EKC Tournament Finals played at the Morehead State University courts.
In the boys’ singles semi-finals, Tanner Osborne was matched up against Ashton Whitt from Morgan County, who won 8-0. Ashton was the eventual champion of the tournament.
The girls’ singles semi-finals featured Maria Hayes defeating Kimmi Hedge of Rowan County 8-1. This set up the Finals with Katlynn Shumway of Russell. Maria had beaten Katlynn earlier in the season at Russell. Maria won once again. She won 6-1, 6-1 to capture the championship. Maria’s first in her career.
In the girls doubles semi-final, Aliya Lewis & Emma Moudy defeated Thomas & Baldridge of Rowan County, 8-0. This set up another rematch with the Morgan County team of Hammonds & Trusty. The previous two had gone to Morgan County in close sets, they would play two of three sets. This time to decide the winner. Lewis and Moudy lost the first set 6-0. A change in strategy as well as returning sides, and good execution of that strategy led to a much better second set. East Carter won the second set 6-4.
They were tied a set apiece. Tied at 3-3 at the first changeover, Morgan County won four of the next six points and eventually the tiebreak 10-6.
The excellent play of the singles players and the wins by the doubles teams, the East Carter girls had clinched the team championship before the finals were played! This is the third EKC girls’ team championship in school history also winning in 2017 (Co-Champions), and in 2014.
East Carter played Ashland at home Tuesday and return to action against Rose Hill Thursday.
