West Carter baseball is ready for districts.

The Comets will play the first district game this Saturday against Elliott County on their home field after having locked in the first seed during the regular season.

They were 19-13 and 5-1 in district play before playing their last regular season game. They played Greenup County Monday night.

The Comets have had an all-around strong performance this season. They have shown great improvement from last year’s 12-18 finish.

The Comets returned all but two players and yet remain a prominently young team. The Comets only senior this season is Ethan Adkins.

Adkins has done his part as a senior. He has scored 18 runs while adding 18 hits and 21 RBIs to the stats. He has hit four doubles, one triple and one homerun.

Ben Wilburn has led the team with a .532 batting average. He 50 hits before last week’s game against Powell County.

Wilburn also leads the team in doubles and stolen bases. He has hit 16 doubles and has stolen 30 bases.

Trevor Callahan has been the team’s ace. He has improved from a 2.93 ERA to a 1.12 ERA this season. He has pitched 37.2 innings and thrown 61 strikeouts.

Callahan also leads the team in RBIs. He had 35 RBIs. He has hit four doubles, two triples and three home runs. He has a .387 batting average.

Just behind Callahan is Trace Tackett. Tackett has 33 RBIs. He has hit 10 doubles, one triple and two home runs. He has a .333 batting average.

Tackett is also part of the team’s pitching staff. He has pitched the most innings thus far. He has thrown 62 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched.

As a team, the Comets have 225 hits and a .280 batting average. They have a 2.58 ERA and have thrown 200 strikeouts.
