The editor:

Several years ago I was struck by the number of Carter Countians whose obituaries requested that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to their church. That request impressed me as to the priorities of the deceased but also as to the value of that church to that person and family.

I began a personal practice of honoring those requests with small contributions to that church of choice. It is not that great a cost to me individually and may be of real value if enough of us followed suit for that church to afford that new organ or song books or even that needed roof job. Give it a try. I believe you will be happy you did.
