Wednesday, October 9

Funtoberfest Scarecrow contest submissions due. Individuals, clubs, classrooms, and church groups are all eligible to enter the contest. Cash prizes will be awarded for best overall, most original and scariest. Scarecrows must be 2 feet tall or taller and secured on a wood or rebar peg suitable for holding the scarecrow in the ground or on a hay bale. Entries may be brought to the tourism cabin from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Other drop-off times may be available. Contact the tourism office at (606)474-8740, or via email at heartoftheparks@windstream.net, for details or with any questions. Judging will take place on Friday, and winners will be announces on Saturday, after the parade. Name, address, and phone number must be included on a 3X5 card, and given to the tourism coordinator at the cabin.

Author George Eklund will present readings from his upcoming book of poetry, The Island Blade, and chapbook Wanting to Be an Element, at the Grayson branch of the Carter County Public Library, 1 p.m. Event sponsored by the Friends of the Carter County Public Library and the Carter County Poetry Society.

Willard Community Harvest Festival, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Field next to Willard Church of Christ. Old fashioned games and events include horseshoes, cornhole, 3-legged races, sack races, hay rides, storytelling, live gospel music, and more. Lunch is provided and all events and activities are free of charge.

Farm & Family Night at the Carter County Soil Conservation District and Carter County Cooperative Extension, featuring guest speaker Doris Hamilton, Hemp Program Manager for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. Registration begins at 4:30 p.m. Program starts at 5:30, with 4-H awards at 6:30, Dinner at 7, and contest winners announced at 7:30. The event awards one hour of credit toward certification for 4-H livestock exhibitors. Meal is provided by FFA. Dessert entries, in the cake, pie or cookie categories, must be submitted by 6 p.m. Bring your own lawn chair.

“Hocus Pocus” movie night and costume contest, Olive Hill Depot. Come dressed as your favorite character from the movie. Costume contest at 7:15 p.m. Movie at dusk. Bring a blanket or lawn chair to sit on. The Drive-In food truck will be on site.

Third Annual “It's Fall, Y'all” vendor and craft festival, Olive Hill Depot, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Featuring pun'kin chunkin', plank board races, hay bale toss, costume contests, costumed bed races, pumpkin bowling, cooking, canning and candies contest, and other events.

Trunk or Treat at the Olive Hill Depot, 5 – 7 p.m. sponsored by various local churches. Free event featuring hot dogs, popcorn, chips and other refreshments, bounce house, face painting, balloon animals and “A Journey Through the Bible” with stories. West Carter High School Agriculture Dept./FFA are holding their annual mum sale. Flowers are available for purchase from the West Carter High School greenhouse, Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Colors are red, yellow, white, orange/bronze, and pink/lavender. Cost is $6 each. H.E.L.P. Health equipment for Local People is a new service here in Carter County. We are a non-profit group to help get gently used medical equipment recycled and in the hands of those that need it. Also to help provide needed protein supplements, and adult briefs of all sizes to those with limited insurance coverage, especially the elderly. We need donations of wheelchairs, potty chairs, shower seats, walkers, lift chairs and medical supplies. Some people can’t afford this or copay is to high. H.E.L.P.
