The first organizational meeting of Memory Days, Grayson’s Annual Community celebration was called by coordinator Robert L. Caummisar for Tuesday, January 30 at 7 p.m. at the City Hall on Main Street.

Memory Days is coordinated by a committee under the general direction of the Grayson Area Chamber of Commerce. Numerous local organizations participate in a variety of ways, from sponsoring annual events to taking part in the parade.

The January 30 meeting was open to any in the public who have ideas to better the event and to learn of events and projects already planned. It is already expected the annual Art in the Park parade and parade will be held. At the meeting decisions were made as to dates, theme, and identity of the parade Grand Marshall.

The theme contest winner will again receive $25, recognition and official Memorial Day’s tee shirt containing the theme and the later chosen logo. The theme is to be six works or less and delivered to coordinator Bob Caummisar by noon January 30 at his office at 301 West Main Street or faxed to 606-474-4422 or emailed to The 2006 theme was “Young, Old and All Between” and in 2005 it was “Our Youth, Our Hope, Our Future.” With the past two years themes being guided by the committee is a certain direction, this year’s theme contest will be wide open. The orginial Memory Days theme which remains a permanent general theme is “Come to Grayson to Remember and to be Remembered.”

In recent years the Memory Days committee has directed and guided the annual theme contest in certain directions. For 2007 the contest will be wide open. Said coordinator Robert L. Caummisar, “We had certain national themes at the turn of the century, on the 40th anniversary of the Jaycees, recognition to the greatest generation and Main Street as well as our youth. This year, we believe a memorable theme will surface that will catch something of the unique nature of Grayson for our celebration. The person who submits the theme chosen by the Committee will receive a $25 prize, recognition and an official Memory Days 2007 tee shirt containing the theme. The theme is to contain six words or less. Grayson Memory Days 2007 will be on all souvenirs, so entries do not need to include those words.

Memory Days 2007 is being organized. Dates of most events are expected to be May 24-27. Organizations, businesses, groups or individuals planning to hold a public event during Memory Days are asked to inform Coordinator Robert Caummisar of the time, date, location and any particulars as to entry deadline, admission cost, prizes awarded and contact person as soon as possible. Theme chosen

From among 46 entires in the Grayson Area Chamber of Commerce Memory Days Theme Contest, Lee Wright of Wilson Creek submitted the winning choice. “Mr. Wright’s entry, ‘Grayson - Small Town with a Big Heart’, captures some of the essence of our community,” Memory Days coordiator Bob Caummisar said.

The committee announced the annual logo contest which is black words on white, 8 x 8 entry containing the above theme, as well as the words Memory Days 2007. Entries must be received by March 6.For more information, call Caummisar at 474-9522
