West Lady Comets

West’s Erika Webb sails to the hoop for two of her game-best 14 points, Monday.

OLIVE HILL - While the West Carter girls survived their first-round matchup to gain the 62nd District semifinals, the boys from Olive Hill saw their season come to a close in a 30-point loss to last year’s regional runnerup Elliott County.

The Lady Comets pulled away from a much-improved Lady Lion squad from Sandy Hook, winning 64-43. The win sends head coach Von Perry’s bunch into Thursday’s championship game against the East Carter/Morgan County winner.

“We’ll certainly have to play much better, pick it up another level,” Perry told The Journal-Times. “We’ll need to play better against whichever team we’ll play.”

When asked which of the statistical categories she was happiest with, Perry answered matter-of-factly. “The final score, obviously,” she said with a smile. We won and that’s what we’re proud of – it’s survive and advance.”

Erika Webb led a trio of Lady Comets in double figures with a game-best 14 points. Charla Burchett and Kristin Burchett each finished with 10 points. Sydnie Cox netted nine and Ashley Shelton had a half-dozen.

The Lady Comets forced Elliott County into 25 turnovers and converted those spills into 24 points. On the flip side, the Lions were only able to pick up three points on a dozen West Carter turnovers. Elliott dominated under the glass, winning the battle of the boards 46-35.

Hallie Griffith led Elliott with 13 points and Shae Ferguson had nine.

“That’s what I’m most disappointed with,” Perry said. “That and we missed way too many easy layups.”

Jeremy Webb’s Comets slipped behind early and even though the Comets regained their footing in the second period, the outmatched locals couldn’t match the firepower of the hard-charging Lions. Elliott County will take on either East Carter of Morgan County in Friday night’s boys’ championship.

West was without the services of all-area senior guard Michael Hollingsworth who was sidelined following a suspension.
