Too many times we have to hear about the off-court antics of athletes gone wild. And then there are those sound bites when a ‘marquee’ players gripes about not getting paid enough or a snot-nosed rookie whining about not garnering enough recognition…
But one morning a few weeks ago, something took place that makes me very proud to be a community sportswriter. The girls’ and boys’ basketball team from West Carter High School, under the watchful eyes of head coaches Von Perry and Jeremy Webb, took up the task of helping clean up their town. The Lady Comets and Comets agreed to work the portions of US 60 just outside of Olive Hill (the area maintained by Sam Perry and McDonalds) to tidy up the roadside.
While working for the community, the kids and coaches were also able to build their own team unity. Yes it was a hot and not necessarily exciting undertaking, but I was impressed to see these student-athletes so eager to offer their assistance. They even remarked about repaying the folks who come out to their ball games. And as always, Von and Jeremy continue to represent themselves, West Carter and their programs with class, dignity and respect.
Now don’t get me wrong many, many, many local teams and organizations volunteer their time and energy and they all need commended, too. This was just one instance where the media can spotlight a group of young people providing a positive service… and garnering positive attention. Well done!
A few other notes…
My deepest sympathy to my ol’ buddy and Comet fan extraordinaire Chris Perry at the loss of his dad. Only those of us who have been through such a difficult time can honestly understand. Anything I can do, or the paper, please don’t hesitate to ask. Of course your family will miss him, but the entire community will too!
I’ve taken on a few additional responsibilities so as in today’s issue, you’ll see Brad’s and Tonia’s names more often.
And another big tip of the sportswriter’s hat to the Grayson 9/10-year-old softball All-Stars and the Grayson Babe Ruth league winners for representing our community at their respective State Tournaments. You make us all proud!
See you at the game!
