Comets beat Menifee, fall in close contest to Tomcats of Ashland

West Carter hosts next week’s baseball tournament

By Denver Brown, Managing Editor

May 16, 2007 OLIVE HILL -- West Carter scored five runs in the first and five in the sixth on its way to a 13-6 win over 16th region rival Menifee County, last Monday. In the win, the Comets’ sixth on the season, the hosts cracked the Wildcat pitchers for a dozen hits.

“We got off to a good start in that first inning,” Comet baseball boss Stan McGlone told The Journal-Times. “But we let (Menifee) back into it, and we were only up 8-6 heading into the sixth – but we came up with five huge insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.”

Matt Logan and Brad Vanlandingham each belted three hits for the West Carter offense. Corey Oney helped his cause from the mound by smacking a pair of hits from the plate and Brett Tackett also had two hits. Joseph Lee and Zeb Brown each finished with RBI-singles.

“We still have to be better focused at the plate and not get impatient, but it was nice to see that many hits,” McGlone said.

Oney struck out 11 ‘Cat batters in pitching the complete-game win. Oney allowed six hits and two walks and no earned runs.

“Our pitching and defense has gotten better as the season progresses,” the coach said. “Now we’ll see how we do in the postseason.”

The Comets, third-seed in next week’s 62nd District Tournament, face No. 2 Morgan County in one of Monday’s first-round pairings. Top-seeded East Carter plays Elliott County in the other opener and the boys’ championship is set for Tuesday, May 21. The Comets will play hosts to next week’s district games.
