Raiders keep winning

East takes five of six and is 12-5 on the season

By Denver Brown, Managing Editor

May 2, 2007 GRAYSON -- East Carter has certainly hit its stride on the basepaths of late.

In spite of a lopsided loss to surging Lawrence County, winner of eight straight, the Raiders have taken five of six including three in a row. The Guys from Grasyon have scored consecutive wins over Fairview, Elliott County and Russell and are now 12-5 on the season.

Jeremiah Shearer’s club got six in the second and added eight more in the third on the way to a 15-4 romp at Fairview, Monday.

“We played very well against a decent Fairview (9-6) squad,’ Coach shearer told The Journal-Times. “We seem to be getting better every game and starting to play the way we are capable of playing.”

In the game-shortened win, Raider ace Ryan Sagraves gave up just four hits while sitting seven down on strikes. Eddie Seagraves paced the Raider bat attack going 3-3 at the plate with a double. Evan Vincent turned in a 2-2 effort at the plate in the 11-run win.

The Raider offense exploded in a 21-hit ripping of Elliott County in Sandy Hook over the weekend. Seven players had at least two hits in the 19-1 skinning of the Lions.

“We came out aggressive and put the game out of reach in that first inning,” the East Carter baseball boss said of the 9-run opening at bat. “That’s what we need to do. We can’t let teams hand around and we did a good job of putting them away, early.”

Following the big first inning, East brought in six in the second then plated one in the third and three more in the fourth. Elliott County managed one run in the bottom of the first.

Matt Shaffer [itched the win for the Raiders, fanning six and yielding one lone hit to the hosts.

Eddie Seagraves had a one-hitter from the mound and Tommy Dearfield’s 3-3 show included a home run as East roughed up Russell, 10-0, last Thursday at Raider Field.

“This was a great example of putting all aspects of the game together,’ Coach Shearer said. “Great pitching and defense combined with timely hitting will have a good outcome, every time.”

Seagraves struck out six, walked none and gave up one hit in pitching the five-inning win. Dearfeid’s bid day at the plate (3-3) only missed a cycle by a triple. The senior slugger ripped a single and double to go with his round-tripper.
