Monica Stevens goes for two from the field during Friday’s matchup with Russell.

The West Carter Lady Comets dropped two games recently, putting them at 7-15 on the season.

On Friday, West played host to Russell’s Lady Red Devils, who are now 7-13.

The Lady Comets took an early lead, 16-13 in the first quarter, but the Lady Devils fought back to tie the game at 22-22 at the half. Russell took control of the lead in the third, 36-32, and stayed on top for the win, 55-40.

Brittany Oney led the Lady Comets in scoring with 14 points and nailed 3-for-3 from three-point range. Kristin Perry and Monica Stevens put up eight points each. Brittany Tackett sank four while Desirae Fultz and Lena Reynolds had two each.

“Being off from school the past two weeks and not getting to play any games definitely showed in this game,” Coach Von Perry said. “The intensity level was way below what it should be at this time of the year.”

Overall, the Lady Comets went 7-for-10 at the line and sank 100-percent from the three-point range.

“We are in the home stretch going towards the post season,” Perry said. “We don't need to be playing like the season just began.”

On Monday night West played host to Ashland Blazer’s Kittens for a 47-45 loss.

The Kittens pulled out an early 13-10 lead and the Lady Comets fought back, but still trailed by two at the half.

“This is the eighth game this season where, if the little things would have went a different way we would have won,” Perry said. “We played great defense not allowing them to score one field goal in the fourth quarter but they got their seven points from free throws.”

Stevens led the Lady Comets with 23 points and Perry sank nine. Oney sank four and Reynolds sank three. Janice Shepherd and D. Fultz had two each. Overall the team sank 50-percent from the line and hit 42 percent from the field. Stevens led the team in rebounding, pulling down 18 of the team’s 35 total.

“We out rebounded them, which is something we had been struggling with,” Perry said. “They hit two free throws with less than a second on the clock to win it. We played the third best team in the region down to the wire and that is something to be proud of.”

The Lady Comets will play host to Bath County on Friday. The Lady Wildcats are 5-15 this season and sit at number 15 in the Region. On Saturday West heads to Lewis County. The Lady Lions are 12-6 on the season and are currently ranked fifth in the Region. Both games have tip-off slated for 7:30 p.m.
