The 65th Annual Carter County Spelling Bee was held on Thursday, Feb. 7. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Citizens National Bank, City National Bank, The Commercial Bank of Grayson and the First National Bank of Grayson for sponsoring this event. With their financial support, the students received participation trophies for their school spelling bees, award plaques were presented to the Champion and Runner-Up, and the students and their sponsors enjoyed lunch.
Congratulations to Jackie Kees for winning the county spelling bee. She will advance to the state level Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee to be held in Louisville on March 9. Also, congratulations to Abby Gillispie who was the runner up.
I would like to thank several others for their part in making the 65th Annual Carter County Spelling Bee a success. Ms. Wilburn, principal of ECMS, hosted the Spelling Bee at her school. Deidra Bowling-Meade, Library Media Specialist at West Carter High School, and Karen Marcum, Library Media Specialist at East Carter High School, served as judges. Treva Barker served as the pronouncer, making the participants feel comfortable and less nervous. The Carter County Schools Technology Department made the spelling bee available, via a live feed, to all schools in the district. All of these people, along with school principals, coaches, teachers, and students helped to make this event successful.
