Drugs touch many lives - Week 14

October 24, 2007 Editor’s Note: This is a series of first-hand accounts of lives touched by drugs here in Carter County The names will be changed to protect identity.

During the past 13 weeks I have read so many touching stories about the death and destruction caused by drugs. I know so well what each and every one of you feel because I also had a child who used.

Thank God he is now clean. Still, every day you wake up and wonder is today the day it starts again and each night you go to bed and thank God that is didn’t.

He is such a kind, loving and caring person, so different from what he had become while a user.

I don’t think there is a family in this county that has not in some way been affected by this evil demon. I have a nephew that is still using. I have cousins that use. I have a friend whose son is a user and I have a friend who lost a son.

What is it going to take for people to wake up? I used to think that this was the most wonderful place to raise children but now we are no better off than people living in the heart of the larger cities like Detroit.

It’s heartbreaking to go out of state and hear people refer to our little town of Olive Hill as “Little Chicago”.

All you people please, before you take that first pill or first snort or stick the first needle in, think about your moms, dads, brothers, sisters, children and friends because you are not only killing yourselves, you are taking our lives too and we love you.

NOTE: Those who are or have been addicted to drugs or have suffered loss due to the drug addiction of others are invited to send their story to mhogan@journal-times.com fax to 474-0013 or 286-4201, or drop off at the Grayson or Olive Hill offices.
