10/2/13 — Mary Opal Gilliam Dean, 80, of Olive Hill, passed away Wednesday morning, Oct. 2, 2013, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born Sept. 14, 1933, in Carter County, a daughter of the late Jason and Martha Lawhorn Gilliam.

Opal was a member of the United Church of God in Portsmouth, Ohio, and was retired from the Smokey Valley Truck Stop. She enjoyed going to church, going to yard sales, going to Senior Citizen activities and spending time with her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Kendall Dean; her daughter, Teresa Dean Mitchell; one grandson, Brian Clinton Rose; two brothers, Charlie Gilliam and Bill Gilliam; and two sisters, Bertha Smith and Ann Gilliam.

Opal is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Tammie Dean of Olive Hill; a grandson she raised as a son, Michael Dean and his wife Melissa of Nicholasville; a niece she raised as a daughter, Patricia Kaye Hargett of Mt. Sterling; four grandchildren, Terri Blevins and husband Mark of Olive Hill, Jason Rose of Baltimore, Md., Steven Dean of Olive Hill and Jonathan Hargett of Morehead; four great-grandchildren, Blake Dean of Lexington, Mykaila Dean of Nicholasville, Tyler Gillispie of Olive Hill and Chase Blevins of Olive Hill; her son-in-law, John Mitchell of Olive Hill; and her lifelong friend, Sarah Jane Carver. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at Oney-Henderson Funeral Home in Olive Hill with Brother Terry Dean and Minister Frank Dunkle officiating. Burial will follow in the Dean Cemetery off of Ky. 2 in Olive Hill.

Friends may visit from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, and until the service hour Friday at Oney-Henderson Funeral Home, 145 Gearhart Street, Olive Hill, KY 41164.

Blake Dean, Tyler Gillispie, Chase Blevins, Steven Dean, John Newsome, Allen Dean and Jonathan Hargett will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearer will be Dwaylon Dean.
