08/22/13 — Ruby E. “Red” Stamper, 97, of Mansfield, Ohio, passed away Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital.
The son of Albert and Ellie (Davis) Stamper, Ruby was raised in Olive Hill. Growing up in a family that loved music, Ruby had a great ear for music and was self-taught at the guitar, banjo and french harp.
Growing up in the hills of Kentucky, as a young boy, Ruby became an excellent shot. As a teenager, he was drafted into the Army and served valiantly in the European Theater during WWII. A sharp shooter, Ruby was awarded two purple hearts for sustaining wounds in action, as well as a bronze star. Following his honorable discharge, Ruby worked for Empire Detroit Steel for more than 30 years.
Ruby was a member of V.F.W., American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. A faithful Republican, by far Ruby’s favorite president was Ronald Reagan.
He is survived by his daughter, Violet Best of Mansfield; two sons, Ted (Barb) Stamper of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, and Lafe Stamper of Mansfield; six grandchildren, Michael (Barb) Crossno and Mark Crossno, all of Florida, Marty (Kim) Crossno of South Carolina, Luke (Shannon) Stamper of Galion, Ohio, Samantha Rollins of Mansfield and Katrina Stamper (John Miller) of Bucyrus, Ohio; nine great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Katy (Tabor) Stamper in 2000; daughter, Mary Ann Stamper; sisters, Martha Duzan and Luanna McCoy; and brothers, John, Charlie and Wilburn Stamper.
Calling hours will be from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, 350 Marion Avenue, Mansfield, OH 44903, (419) 525-4411.
Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. and the Rev. Earl Tackett will officiate. Burial with military honors performed by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will follow in Oak Grove Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Snyder Funeral Homes to assist the family with funeral expenses may be made through the funeral home.
