3/20/14 — Nellie Marie Harris Gilliam, 90, of Olive Hill, passed away Tuesday afternoon, March 18, 2014, at Woodland Oaks in Ashland.
She was born Dec. 21, 1923, in Lewis County, a daughter of the late John William and Bessie Pendlum Harris.
Nellie was a member of the Olive Hill Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 290, retired from the Dollar General Store and volunteered many years in the Gift Shop at St. Claire Medical Center. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Olive Hill.
She married Woodrow Gilliam on April 18, 1940, and was married for 67 years when he passed away in 2007. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Gilbert Lee Gilliam; one son-in-law, Jack Pope; and two brothers, Shelby Harris and Kenneth Harris.
Nellie is survived by two daughters, Wilma Pope of Ashland and Pam Duncan and husband Butch of New Albany, Ind.; four grandchildren, Desiree Sizemore and husband Duane of Grayson, Scott Pope and wife Tonya of Ashland, Justin Duncan of Lexington and Lindsay Alexander and husband Ryan of Greenwood, Ind.; three great-granddaughters, Kelley Pope, Amanda Sizemore and Sarah Sizemore; and three brothers, Lloyd Harris of Olive Hill, Carlos Harris and wife Mildred of Grayson and Denny Harris and wife Betty of Olive Hill. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill with Brother David Gee and Brother Clarence Mansfield officiating. Burial will follow in the Olive Hill Memorial Park.
Friends may visit from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2014, and until the service hour Saturday at Globe Funeral Chapel, 17277 West US Highway 60, Olive Hill, KY 41164. Eastern Star rites will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home by the Olive Hill Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 290.
Nellie’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be her brothers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Avenue, Ashland, KY 41101; or to the First Christian Church, P. O. Box 538, Olive Hill, KY 41164.
