May 12, 2014 — Mrs. Avonell Hicks Holloway, age 90, of Olive Hill, passed away Saturday morning, May 10, 2014, at Woodland Oaks in Ashland.
She was born April 30, 1924, in Carter County, a daughter of the late Goble and Maudie Nolen Hicks.
Avonell attended James Chapel Christian Holiness Church and was a homemaker. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, listening to gospel music, and spending time with her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one grandson, Nathan Greenhill, and two brothers, Eshmel Hicks and Leo Hicks.
Avonell is survived by one son, Louard Holloway of Chicago, Illinois; three daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara Ann and Gordon Nolen of Vanceburg, Joyce Holloway of Olive Hill, and Brenda Shumate of Olive Hill; eight grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Rosalee Hicks of Maineville, Ohio; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Marjorie Keaton of Olive Hill, Madgelene Stapleton of Mansfield, Ohio, Audrey and Woody Williams of Ashland, Ohio, and Darlene Thompson of Blaine; several nieces and nephews; and her devoted companion and friend, Burthel James of Olive Hill. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with her grandson, Bart Lewis, and Brother Paul Schmidt officiating. Burial will follow in the Garvin Ridge Cemetery in Olive Hill.
Friends may visit from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2014, and until the service hour on Tuesday at Globe Funeral Chapel, 17277 West US Highway 60, Olive Hill, Kentucky 41164.
Kelly Nolen, Kasey Nolen, Bart Lewis, Ryan Tussey, Dwight Keaton, Louie Keaton, Jeff Thompson, Gary Thompson, and Gary Hicks will serve as pallbearers.
