John Delmar Perry

1939-2014

01/28/14 — John Delmar Perry, 74, of Ashland, passed away suddenly of natural causes at his daughter’s residence in Lexington on Friday evening, Jan. 24, 2014.

He was born July 24, 1939, in Rooney, a son of the late Elliott and Helen Faye Kibbey Perry.

John graduated from Erie School in 1957 and began his 25-year career at Ashland Oil upon graduation. While working at Ashland Oil, John met and, in 1959, married the love of his life, Katherine "Katie" Caudill Perry. While working full-time and helping to raise two children, John attended Marshall University and received his undergraduate degree in 1969 and an MBA in 1971.

After his Ashland Oil career and a 10-year residence in The Woodlands, Texas, John and Katie returned to Ashland, and he began his 18 years of service as the director of Bethany House Christian Service Center, in his home town of Olive Hill. Katie joined him in service at Bethany House as the Good Neighbor Coordinator. As a testament to their dedication to the community, neither accepted a salary during the last nine years of their tenure. He and Katie retired from Bethany House in July 2013.

John was a 32nd degree Mason and a past Master of the Olive Hill Masonic Lodge No. 629, as well as a member of the El Hasa Shrine Temple. He was both a Kentucky Colonel and a Kentucky Admiral. John loved Kentucky basketball, good food and lively company. He was an avid storyteller who conjured up vivid tales for his children and later his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his older brother, Robert Nelson Perry.

John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Katherine Caudill Perry; his two children, Angela Perry Horger (Jason) of Lexington and John Delmar "Zeke" Perry II (Lori) of Hurricane, W.Va.; his brothers, William Fred Perry (Priscilla) of Spring, Texas, and Samuel Raymond Perry (Helen) of Dunwoody, Ga.; and his sister-in-law, Mary Lou Perry of Ashland. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Katherine Rose Horger, Allison Paige Perry and Mason Douglas Perry, as well as countless other beloved family and friends.
