05/07/13 — Cheryl Anne Griffith Brammell, 56, passed away Monday, May 6, 2013, at the Ashland Community Hospice Center, after a 14 year courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She departed this world to be with her Lord, leaving behind a legacy of strength, courage, determination, grace, dignity and love.
Cheryl was born on Feb. 7, 1957, in Ashland, the daughter of the late Paul Raymond Griffith and Dorothy Kendall Griffith of Lloyd. While growing up in Lloyd, she was an active member of the First Christian Church of Greenup and graduated from Greenup County High School in 1975. She worked at Applegate’s Supermarket in Greenup as a bookkeeper until she moved to Lexington in August 1980 to continue her education. She earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1982 from the University of Kentucky. During that time, she met Keith and they were wed on June 5, 1982. They resided in Lexington and Cheryl worked as a bookkeeper for the medical practice of Drs. Hobbs and Hobbs until June 1985. They moved to Pikeville where she was employed at Pikeville National Bank as an internal auditor. In August 1986, they returned to Keith’s hometown of Grayson and she resided there until her death.
Cheryl was a certified public accountant and worked for 27 years at the accounting firm of Griffith, Delany, Hillman and Company as senior auditor. She was a member of the Kentucky Society of Certified Public Accountants. Cheryl was a member of the First Christian Church of Grayson and during her children’s high school years, she was an active member of the East Carter Band Boosters and the East Carter Football Boosters. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as a voluntary faculty member for Ashland Community and Technical College, teaching accounting.
In addition to her father, Cheryl was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Travis and Dorothy Kendall; her paternal grandparents, Dennis and Mabel Griffith; her uncle, Joe Kendall; her father-in-law, Gordon Brammell; a sister-in-law, Debbie Brammell; and “Mamaw”, Beatrice Brammell.
Survivors include her mother; her husband, Keith; her daughter, Laura Lynne (Anthony) Donta of Grayson; grandson, Jacob Daniel Donta; her son, Darren Craig Brammell of Morehead; and two brothers, David (Nancy) Griffith of Raceland and Gary (Karen) Griffith of Lloyd. Other survivors include two nephews, Scott Griffith of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Zachary Griffith of Raceland; two nieces, Emily Griffith of Morehead and Kendall Griffith of Raceland; her mother-in-law, Mary Brammell of Grayson; her brother-in-law, Denny (Teri) Brammell of Rush; her aunt, Mary Lou Kendall of Greenup; and a host of family and friends to mourn her passing.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Malone Funeral Home by Jack Edwards and Tim Burton. Visitation where friends and family may call will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Malone Funeral. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Burial Park in Grayson.
