Stella Confer Uhler

01/09/13 — Stella Confer Uhler, 98, of Grayson, passed away December 31, 2012, at Boyd Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Stella was born September 3, 1914, in Beech Creek, Penn., the daughter of the late Laura Mapes and Burton J. Confer.

She was a loving wife and homemaker for 69 years to the love of her life, the late J. Robert (Bob) Uhler. They were inseparable until his death in 2006. She is also preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Schnell, and a granddaughter, Lori J. Stidham Saunders.

Stella was a graduate of Lock Haven High School in Lock Haven, Penn., and Maison Frederick Beauty School at Pittsburgh, Penn.

She was owner and operator of Jay’s Beauty Shop for several years until the birth of her daughter.

Stella was a member of Bagby Memorial United Methodist Church where she taught an adult Sunday school class for 40 years and was a member of the United Methodist Women, choir and administrative board. 

Stella was an accomplished seamstress from a very young age, creating suits, sport coats, dresses and many other items for her family. She also loved to knit and made beautiful sweaters for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as for gifts. She also loved to read and play games.

She is survived by a son, J. Robert Uhler II of North Andover, Mass.; a daughter, Tina (Boots) Stidham of Grayson; five grandchildren; Susan Sills, Jeff and Matt Uhler and Scott and Marty Stidham; and seven great grandchildren, Whitney, Tanner, Code and Shelby Stidham, Sutton and Gavin Saunders and Grayson Uhler.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 3, at Bagby Memorial United Methodist Church, Grayson, by Susan L. Elkow and Fred Wiles, pastors. Burial will follow in East Carter County Memory Gardens. 

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bagby Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 N. Hord Street, Grayson, KY 41143.

Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson is in charge of arrangements.
