William Thomas Jayne

1941-2013

06/17/13 — William Thomas Jayne, 71, beloved father of three, grandfather of six and a former sales executive with IBM in Charleston, S.C., died on June, 13, 2013, at Trident Hospital in North Charleston, S.C.

Bill was born on Christmas Day, 1941, in Grayson to Maxine Yates Jayne and William Wurtz Jayne. He loved to explore the caves and fish in the surrounding lakes and creeks of Carter County. He moved to Plant City, Fla., with his family as a young teen and later attended Auburn University. Bill made his first forays into the world of sales with WearEver, marketing pots and pans in Atlanta, before rising at IBM with stints in Grand Rapids, Mich., and Tampa, Fla. At one point he served as district manager of Southwestern Michigan at the age of 29 and was acknowledged as the youngest district manager in IBM's history at that time. But it was the Lowcountry that he decided to make his home and settled permanently in Ladson/ Summerville in 2006. Bill was happiest when sailing the waters off Charleston and when training his mechanical, electrical and carpentry skills on a project. After a 30-year career with IBM, he combined his passions and craftsmanship to launch Jayne Boat Works, refurbishing sailboat engines in his garage for several years.

He is survived by his son, William Michael Jayne of Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Sara (Andrew) Jayne Young of Atlanta, Ga., Lisa (Mark) Jayne Greenslit of Summerville, S.C.; six grandchildren, Katherine Jayne Greenslit, Nathan William Greenslit, Naomi Jayne Young, Jacob Eli Young, Faya Grace Greenslit and Lillian Mei Greenslit; sister, Jill Jayne Read of Athens, Ga.; and loyal dachshund, Lucy.

A private memorial ceremony will be at a later date.

Donations in Bill’s memory may be made to the American Heart/Stroke Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA  23058-5216.
