Virgil C. Gee, 90, of Olive Hill, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, July 9, 2013, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland after a battle with cancer.
He was born March 1, 1923, in Olive Hill, a son of the late Archimade "Kim" and Ollie "Virgie" Whitt Gee. He was the fourth of six children, including twins Harold "Tweety" and Darell "Chub" and the late Hurst, Hazel and Edward.
Virgil was patriotic, strong, faithful and tenacious in mind, body and spirit. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Virgil saw action in the South Pacific, mostly on the U.S.S. Tennessee and U.S.S. Pennsylvania. These battle ships were all an integral part of WWII, seeing fighting at Iwo Jima, Okinawa and many other islands. While serving in the pacific, he witnessed the signing of the surrender of Japan.
When the war ended, Virgil returned home to Tick Ridge. On June 25, 1946, he married Dora Middleton, whom he met through a friend after the war. They recently celebrated 67 years of marriage. Together they would have four children.
Virgil eventually served as a city policeman in Olive Hill and a truck driver. After his retirement, he loved tending to his yard, caring for his horse, watching Reds baseball and UK basketball, spending time with family and friends and studying the Bible. He was an active member of the Olive Hill Church of Christ.
In addition to his parents and older siblings, he was preceded in death by a son, Joe.
Virgil is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dora Middleton Gee; his children, Carolyn "Johnnie" Johnson, Keith (Alberta) Gee, Kay (Ronnie) Rice and Phillip (Elexis) Gee; 16 grandchildren, Hugh, Allen, Bobbi Lynn, Teresa, Samantha, Suzi, Tracy "Bub", Jenny, Terry, Tyler, Rhonda, Jon, Keith Allen, Sarah, Jason and Wilbur; 24 great-grandchildren; and many loving family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2013, at Oney-Henderson Funeral Home in Olive Hill with Brother Marvin Gearhart, Brother Brent Duncan, Brother John Brown and Brother Dustin Rose officiating. Burial will follow in the Tick Ridge Cemetery in Olive Hill with full military rites conducted by the Olive Hill American Legion Post No. 9438.
Friends may visit from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2013, and until the service hour Thursday, at Oney-Henderson Funeral Home, 145 Gearhart Street, Olive Hill, KY 41164.
Terry Joe Gee, Tyler Gee, Keith A. Gee, Jonathan Rice, Austin Gee and Sam Thompson will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Jason Spurlock, Dalton Spurlock, Hugh Johnson, Alan Johnson, Ryan Rayburn and Marvin Gearhart.
