Virginia Jean Shaffer Slone

12/27/13 — Virginia Jean Shaffer Slone, 80, departed this life Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Jean was born on Dec. 4, 1933, in Stinson, to the late William Shaffer and Stella Hutchison Shaffer.

Jean was a retired employee of the United States Postal Service and a member of the First Baptist Church of Grayson.

She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Inger Stephens Slone.

Jean is survived by her husband of 58 years, John Allen Slone; one son, Jeffrey (Leslie) Slone; three daughters,  Johnda Slone, Jeri (Quentin) Thomas and Jina (Dean) Tackett, all of Grayson; six grandchildren, Jeremy (Rebecca) Thomas of Lexington, Shae Thomas of Grayson, Gabe (Amanda) Slone of Louisville, Zack Slone of Morehead, Trei Tackett of Lexington and Madison Tackett of Grayson; one great-grandchild, Inger Grace Slone of Louisville; the anticipated birth of a great-grandson, Cooper Brooks Thomas (Lexington); a sister, Violet Bradley of Grayson; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at the First Baptist Church in Grayson with Paul Schmidt officiating. Burial will follow in the East Carter County Memory Gardens. 

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Malone Funeral Home and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church. 

Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons and sons-in-law. Honorary pallbearers will be Marcus Suttles, David Slone, Greg Slone and Wayne Stephens.
