June 12, 2014 — Karen Yvonne Calhoun of Grayson, formerly of Lexington and Hitchins, died on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 in home. She was preceded in death by her parents, R. W. and Faye Reeves Calhoun of Grayson. She is survived by her only brother Gary Calhoun and his wife, Barbara of Raceland, and her 2 nephews, John Calhoun of Cincinnati, OH and Charles Calhoun of Raceland. She is also survived by her best friend, Laura Fanneccia Vincent of Ashland.
Born in Ashland, on July 21, 1947, she graduated from Hitchins High School where she was honored as class valedictorian and class president. She was a graduate of the UK College of Education with a BA in English and History. Also a graduate of UK’s graduate school, she received an MA in Secondary Reading with a specialist degree in secondary remedial reading. Her love of UK basketball began when she was a young girl and continued until her death. She was a lifetime member of the UK Alumni Club. She was retired from the Fayette County Board of Education in 1996 after teaching 20 years at Crawford Middle School. She also taught for seven years in Carter County at Hitchins High and East Carter High.
Karen believed in supporting all of her professional education associations while active as well as in retirement. In Fayette County, she served 3 terms as secretary of the Fayette County Education Association and was editor of the FCEA and Central KEA Capitol Reports published during general assemblies. She served as a lobbyist in Frankfort, as Language Arts department chair at Crawford, on the Teacher’s Forum in Fayette County, as school rep to FCEA, renovation committee chair for Crawford, the school budget committee, as Beta Club sponsor and teacher advisor to the student newspaper. At Hitchins and East Carter she was junior class sponsor and cheerleading sponsor. In retirement, she was a member of the Carter County Democratic Women’s Club.
Services will be held at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson on Tuesday, June 17 at 1:00 p.m. with Ronnie Blevins and Bryan Bradley. Entombment will be at East Carter County Memory Garden’s Mausoleum.
