Harlan Ray Fleming

1933-2012

04-19-12 — Harlan Ray Fleming, 79, of Grayson, passed away November 20, 2012, at his home after a brief illness.

He was born September 8, 1933, in Willard, to the late Rev. Kenneth and Ethel Bayes Fleming. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Nadine Fleming, and a brother, William Clayton “Tater” Fleming.

Mr. Fleming graduated from Hitchins High School and received degrees from Berea College and Morehead State University. He did additional educational studies at the University of Kentucky, as well as Memphis State University in Tennessee. He worked for 38 years in the Carter County School System as a mathematics teacher, assistant principal and high school principal. He was the first principal of East Carter County High School where he served for 25 years before retiring in 1996.

Harlan was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a Gideon. Before becoming East Carter principal, he was active in many local civic organizations. After his retirement, he enjoyed international traveling, farming, home improvement projects, his family and his dogs, Rugby and Rudy.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Martha Jean Lewis Fleming; and daughters, Donna (Tom) Elliott of Grayson, Jill (Vic) Shackelford of Lexington, and Jeanne Rae (Nathan) Hutchinson of Richmond. He was very proud of his five grandchildren, Patrick Ryan Jones, Dustan Jones, Sydney Shackelford, Caden Elliott and Hannah Rae Hutchinson. Also surviving are a sister, Lois (Dick) Stevens of Grove City, Ohio, and a brother, John Paul (Marzella) Fleming of Grayson, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Viewing was Friday evening, November 23, 2012, from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday after 9 a.m. until service time at the First Baptist Church in Grayson. The funeral was Saturday, November 24, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church with Paul Schmidt, minister. Burial followed in the Hillcrest Cemetery. Malone Funeral Home in Grayson is in charge of the arrangements.
