01/30/14 — Eddie A. Boggs, 68, passed away Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, in Sylvania, Ohio, following an eight month battle with cancer.
The son of Elmer and Pearl, he was born Aug. 10, 1945, in Soldier.
He attended elementary school at Soldier. The family moved to Mansfield, Ohio, in 1959. A graduate of Mansfield High School, Eddie went on to earn a BA Degree from Ohio State University and two Master Degrees from The University of Toledo. He retired from Sylvania Schools in 2007 where he was recognized as Educator of the Year in 2005.
During his 35 years as an educator, he also enjoyed sharing his love of music. Most nights and weekends and summers, throughout the last 40 years, Eddie performed in public, singing the songs he wrote or the 1,000 he memorized, playing guitar or banjo or mandolin and communicating with audiences. He performed at Put-In-Bay, a summer resort area off Lake Erie, for 20 years.
After retiring Eddie did not slow down. He toured regularly as a member of the New Christy Minstrels, the folk-style group formed in the early 1960’s. Also in retirement he was a licensed tour guide, leading tours to Washington, D.C., and other destinations. His smile, sparking blue eyes, servant’s heart and infectious love of life is the Eddie we remember.
Eddie was a true Kentuckian, never losing his love and appreciation for his childhood home. He made regular trips back to the area to visit relatives and life-long friends.
Eddie is survived by his wife, Chris (McCance) Boggs; daughters, Allison Boggs, Sara (John) Roemer and Grace Barton; grandchildren, Landon, Jackson, Kate, Grant and Nola; mother, Pearl Boggs; sister, Tina Obney; and brothers, Carl Boggs, Verlin Boggs and Glenn Boggs.
He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Boggs, and sister, Ruth Nickles.
Funeral services were Jan. 13 at Flanders Rd. Church of Christ in Toledo. A private burial took place at Franklin Church Cemetery in Mansfield, Ohio.
