One Carter County man is in critical condition and another is behind bars following an early morning shooting last Thursday.

Jerry Kilgore remained in St. Mary’s Medical Center, Tuesday, where he underwent surgery to safe his life after he was shot last week at a residence on Jordan Fork in western Carter County.

The KSP received a report of shots fired about 12:15 a.m. Troopers responded and found Kilgore with gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Virginia.

Hansel Danner, 66, of Olive Hill was arrested following the shooting and charged with four felony counts. According to investigating officers, there were witnesses to the shooting and alcohol is believed to be involved.

Danner was arraigned in Carter County District Court Monday, January 29, on one count of assault, 1st degree and three counts of wanton endangerment, 1st degree.

Judge Rupert Wilhoit set Danner’s preliminary hearing for February 5, 1 p.m. and a public defender was appointed.

Kentucky State Police Detective Mark Padgett is investigating the incident.
