West Lady Comets

West Carter Lady Comets

West Carter has already wrapped up the No. 1 seed in next week’s 62nd District Tournament, and now the Lady Comets are taking a big win streak into the final week of the regular season. Head coach Von Perry’s club stands at 17-7 and are fresh off wins over Ashland, Boyd County and Bath County.

Playing on Hop Brown Court, the site of next week’s tournament, West Carter raced to a big lead then settled for a 58-32 throttling of the Lady Cats. Perry’s troops roughed up the Bath County ball handlers for 26 turnovers then converted the spills into 34 points on their way to the 26-point margin of victory.

Brittany Tackett hit 5-7 from the field to lead the Lady Comets with a game-best 12 points. Kristin Burchett, the newest member of the West Carter 1,000th-point club, finished with 10. Sydnie Cox had nine points and Ashley Shelton had a night-high five assists to go alone with seven points. Monica Stevens put six points with seven rebounds. Charla Burchett and Erika Webb each finished with four points and Julie Day, Desirae Fultz and Brittany Oney each chipped in two.

West connected on 5-14 (36-percent) from three-point range and the Lady Comet bench outscored the Bath County reserves, 27-2.

Stevens (12) and Tackett (11) each hit for double figures in the 43-33 win at Ashland last week and Stevens’ 20-point, 12-rebound double double highlighted West’s 57-52 win against Boyd Cuonty. In the win over the Lady Lions, Kristin Burchett popped in 15 points and Charla Burchett added 13.

The Lady Comets, the No. 1 seed in the 62nd District Tournament, take the floor in the home gym against Elliott County (No. 4) in Monday’s opening-round action.
