Jack Fultz Classic resumes this weekend

Nov. 20, 2013 — We are just a few weeks away from the start of the high school basketball season and I, for one, cannot wait to see what the East and West Carter boys and girls basketball teams have in store for the 2013-14 season.

We will all get a glimpse of the Raiders and Comets this weekend for a full day of exciting action on Saturday in the Jack Fultz Classic.

Fultz was a legendary coach at Olive Hill High School and to help carry on his legacy, West Carter holds an all-day event where six teams from across the region will lace ‘em up and play games.

Starting at noon, Fairview will take on Estill County out of the 14th Region on the boys side of things. The Eagles were 12-14 a year ago while the Engineers were 15-17 last season and made the 14th Region Semifinals.

At 1:45 p.m., Hager Easterling will get a good look at what his team will have when they host the Lady Colonels of Bourbon County. The Lady Raiders lost three players and only one starter from last season’s 24-8 and 62nd District Championship team and look to be one of the best teams in the 16th Region this season. Bourbon County struggled a year ago, going 10-21. They have a new coach in Bill Watson to help turn the Lady Colonel program around.

The East Carter boys will follow the girls at 3:30 p.m. when they welcome the Blue Jays of Ripley, Ohio. Coach Brandon Baker’s bunch were 11-18 last year and missed out on the 16th Region tournament. The Blue Jays compiled a 7-12 record a year ago.

The host will then take the stage as West Carter’s girls will battle the Lady Blue Jays of Ripley, Ohio. Bart Stevens is back for another season at the helm of the Lady Comets. He helped guide West to another 16th Region All “A” Championship and a spot in the 16th Region tournament. West Carter was 12-18 last season. Ripley posted a 13-6 record last year.
