Feb. 13, 2013 — Brooke Adkins and Brooke Callihan have been teammates for three seasons so naturally they have developed chemistry over the years.

The two found the right formula this past Wednesday night as West Carter defeated Morgan County 41-23 in West Liberty.

“We can bring the ball up together and were very quick,” Adkins said. “We both know where we are on the court at all times.”

Callihan had 16 points while Adkins chipped in with 10 points, outscoring all of the Lady Cougars by themselves in the victory. Coach Bart Stevens applauded their efforts both on the offensive and defensive side of the floor.

“Callihan and Adkins did a good job of handling the ball and we had a lot of people who played well,” Stevens said. “We have to play well as a unit in order to have any success and we did that.”

The Lady Comets struggled out of the gate, falling behind 8-2 to Morgan. West then put on the clamps defensively late in the first and through the second, going on a 15-0 run spanning almost 10 minutes to put West in the driver’s seat the rest of the way.

“Lexie Berry had her best defensive game of the season,” Stevens said. “It doesn’t show up in the stat sheets but she did a great job in limiting Morgan’s scoring opportunities.”

Senior Megan Centers had seven points, including five in the third quarter to keep the lead up to a nine-point advantage for West. Chelsea Zeigler had four points, Berry had three and Mikaela Buckler contributed with two points to complete the scoring for West (10-15).

“It’s been getting better,” Adkins said. “At the start of the year, we fell down on ourselves but we have really come together as a team and now we’re playing well.”

“They bring the effort out every night and that’s all I can ask,” Stevens said.

“We are starting to grow up and get better as we go along,” Stevens said. “The season is about over and we’ve made great progress.”

The rest of the week did not go according to plan for West Carter. The Lady Comets dropped two decisions, a 49-29 game to Bath County Thursday and 63-40 to Boyd County on Saturday.

The Lady Comets returned to action Tuesday night at home against Fleming County. They finish the regular season Thursday night at Raceland.
