Raider soccer earns 6-1 win on Senior Night

Sept. 11, 2013 — The East Carter boys soccer team hosted senior night in Grayson on Monday to recognize the nine players that have gone through the program in the final year as a Raider.

The nine seniors went out as winners as they defeated Fleming County 6-1. While it is a victory, Coach Billy Kemper wants to see more out of his team.

“It was a win but I don’t think we played that well,” Kemper said. “In the first half, not everyone was wanting the ball and trying to get open and involved. We had a lot of chances to score and should have put them away early.”

East Carter (3-0-2) earned a 2-0 halftime lead on goals from Seth Marsh and Ryan Walker. The lead extended to 6-0 in the second half after Shawn Brown scored a goal on a penalty kick. Marsh and Walker would each score another goal in the second half before Ryker Riffe finished off the scoring for the Raiders. Fleming County (3-3-1) would get on the board with a goal in the final five minutes of the game.

“We played better in the second half but I felt like we were wanting to make the game harder by closing gaps on our forwards,” Kemper said. “Once we get some consistency, we’re going to be alright.”

The speed of the game by East Carter really worked to their advantage, which led to the goals getting through the Fleming defense.

“We kind of wore Fleming down in the second half,” Kemper said. “Our goals were falling at the right time. We had four or five times we ran on the goalkeeper alone and didn’t convert. If we want to be an elite team, we have to take advantage of those opportunities.”

Kemper added: “It’s a good win but this team has so much potential that if we get smarter, we can do a lot of good stuff this year.”
