West girls soccer falls to Rowan County

Sept. 11, 2013 — The West Carter girls soccer team hosted Rowan County last Tuesday in Olive Hill but the Lady Vikings escaped with an 8-1 victory over the Lady Comets.

The Lady Vikings (5-2-1) used a balanced attack in the first half, getting goals from Deanna May, two from sophomore midfielder Hannah Bandura and freshman midfielder Hannah Taylor to race out to a 4-0 lead.

“We have played some really good teams,” Coach Sandra Brown said. “I’m not sure if it was intimidation but we played them really close last year. We had people in different positions and we kind of switched things up. Our players were a little unfamiliar with what they were supposed to do.”

Bandura and May were not done as they each scored again the second half. Bandura finished with four goals to give her nine in the past two games and May had three goals to pace the Lady Vikings. Bandura also contributed with two assists and Baileigh Pennington had one assist.

“That’s the one good thing that we have pretty good depth,” Rowan Coach Randy Wallace said. “If we have someone like Ally Hackney (ankle) out hurt, but so far we’ve filled in pretty good.”

“We had girls waiting on the ball and hesitating and that allowed teams to get the ball from us and Rowan is very fast,” Brown said. “Our defense was taken off guard and we worked on that in practice. We want to move the ball and had better passing and when our defense gets behind like they did it, the quick goals happen.”

Wallace said his squad was able to get out into open space because of the way they were passing the ball up the field.

“We spent a lot of time on that in practice on passing the ball,” Wallace said. “West Carter is a defense-oriented team. They have to work the ball better and pass it quickly.”
