East volleyball season ends

Nov. 6, 2013 — The East Carter volleyball team participated in the 16th Region Volleyball Tournament at Russell High School last week, taking on Fleming County in a rematch of last year’s tournament.

The Lady Raiders however were swept by the Lady Panthers 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-22) to end East’s season.

Just one year ago, East ended Fleming’s season in the same fashion. Coach Cathy Harris felt like her team did not play with any energy.

“I had no idea what was wrong with us,” Harris said. “We just didn’t play like we wanted to win.”

To Fleming’s credit, they played to win. They chased down every loose ball and made the right plays when they needed to.

“We couldn’t get where we were supposed to be,” Harris said. “They really wanted to win this game.”

Whitney Gollihue paced East Carter with 10 kills.

Fleming County raced out to a quick lead in the first set and never looked back. The Lady Panthers were flying all over the court to get their hitters set up for the kill at the net.

“We were just not talking and playing the way we were supposed to,” Harris said. “They just let us make our own mistakes. I just could not find the right button to push to get our girls going.”

Fleming County would bow out of the 16th Region semifinals losing to Ashland 3-1 (25-17, 25-16, 21-25, 25-16). Raceland will represent the 16th Region at the state tournament this weekend in Louisville after knocking off Ashland. It’s only Raceland’s second team region championship in any sport in the last 30 years. They won the 1991 baseball regional championship.

East Carter ends their season with a 14-13 record.

“It hurts for me and my girls,” Harris said. “We came into this game with a mindset of winning this game and moving on in the tournament. We just couldn’t adjust.”
