Sept. 25, 2013 —
The KCU Football Knights traveled to Bluefield, VA on Saturday to take on the Rams of Bluefield College.
The Knights wasted no time getting started. After their opening kickoff coverage put Bluefield deep in their own territory, KCU picked up a fumble on the first play from scrimmage and took it in for the score, then proceeded to do the same thing when Senior Nose Tackle Marvin Newkirk picked up a fumble on the next play from scrimmage, and ran that one in for the score as well.
Less than two minutes off the clock, and the Knights were up 14-0. On Bluefield's next possession, things went a little better, and they got to run three plays before punting, but KCU's Darrell Givens returned the kick 68 yards for the score21-0, and the KCU offense had not been on the field.
After the next Ram possession, KCU's offense went to work, and earned a Drew Slikker field goal to put the Knights up 24-0. Bluefield College then managed a touchdown, and the first quarter ended with the Knights up 24-7.
This proved to be the only points the Rams would put on the board, but KCU scored again in the second when Sophomore QB Shaun Jones hit Senior Marcus Hicks in the end zone, and near the end of the game when Junior Defensive Back Jachovi Hardge returned an interception for a touchdown. The final score was 38-7, with the Knights advancing their record to 2-2. KCU is now 2-1 in Mid-South Conference play, and 1-0 in the Mid-South Conference East Division.
Next week the Knights host the Tigers of Georgetown College for the Fall Homecoming game. The Tigers are ranked No. 6 in the NAIA, and are 1-1, having lost to Ohio Dominican on the road in the first week, and having beaten Bethel University 33-14 in week #2. The Tigers were open in week three of the season.
