Russell rally drops Lady Comets in EKC

Dec. 11, 2013 — After falling to Fleming County in the first round of the EKC Tournament on Saturday, the West Carter Lady Comets traveled to Russell to take on the Lady Devils in the consolation round.

Russell would rally past West 51-47 Monday night, as the Lady Comets would struggle hitting free throws down the stretch. West was 5-for-15 from the charity stripe in the final stanza with the Lady Devils. They went 18-for-38 for the game.

“We had the game won,” Coach Bart Stevens said. “When you miss 10 free throws in the fourth, you can’t win many games like that. We led the whole game but couldn’t close it out.”

Junior Lexie Berry led the Lady Comets (0-4) with 16 points, connecting on three, three-point baskets. Stacy Easterling had 11 points while Lyla Evans scored six points. Morgan Berry contributed with five points, Brooke Adkins had four, Leatha Reynolds had three points and Bonita Easterling had two points to round out the scoring for West Carter.

Stevens said this has been the story for his young team after the first week.

“We could be 4-0 instead of 0-4,” Stevens said. “We had several unforced turnovers. Certain players make free throws but I got really good play out our kids and we had enough to win but we’re not closing these games out. We’re probably the best 0-4 team in the region.”

West Carter would jump out on Russell (3-1) 23-21 at the half. They out-rebounded the Lady Devils by 20 (42-22). But the tale of the tape is at the line. Russell was 23-for-32 and held on for the victory.

“It was nip and tuck the whole way and we played well except for shooting free throws,” Stevens said. “To Russell’s credit, they hit them when they needed to. They shoot the ball well and they make shots they’re supposed to make. If we 50 percent of the ones we are supposed to make, it’s a different story.”
