Aug. 28, 2013 — The East Carter volleyball team opened its season last Tuesday. The Lady Raiders served up a 3-0 (25-3, 25-10, 25-18) victory over Morgan County in West Liberty in 62nd District action.

East (2-2) used precise serving and timely hitting to put away the Lady Cougars (0-3) early. Coach Cathy Harris was proud of her team to come away with a big district win.

“Our girls played well and executed what we wanted to as far as serving and getting in position and practicing what we want to do the rest of the season,” Harris said.

Harris credited junior outside hitter Jordyn Wiler and eighth grade defensive specialist Sara Howard for their serves. East jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first set and then an 18-1 lead before finishing out the first set 25-3.

Harris went to her bench in the second set to give her team some playing experience and it paid off, outscoring Morgan 25-10 in the second set.

“Morgan County will get better as they do throughout the season but I’m happy we got the first district win of the season,” Harris said.

In the third set, things got a little tougher for East as Morgan mounted a comeback. Morgan got within three points before the Lady Raiders finished Morgan off, taking the third set 25-18.

“They settled in our girls got relaxed a little bit and you can’t do that in volleyball because this is a game of spurts,” Harris said.

Harris said her squad wanted to be the aggressor and it showed getting out to quick leads on Morgan County.

“We were wanting to attack quite a bit,” Harris said. “Whitney Gollihue and Chloe Riggs had solid hits. I’m happy with the way we played.”

The Lady Raiders traveled to the buckeye state over the weekend, competing in the South Point Invitational. They fell to Lewis County 2-0 (25-19, 25-10) and Ironton, Oh. 2-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-17). They defeated Rock Hill 2-0 (27-25, 25-22). On Monday, they traveled to Raceland where they lost to the Lady Rams 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-19).
