Running the Point: Impatiently waiting

Aug. 7, 2013 — It is the calm before the storm.

Teams are putting on the pads, setting up goals and nets for the fall sports season that is set to kick off in a few weeks.

For people that have gotten to know me, they know that I am not the most patient person.

So when it comes to the fall sports season, I am no different.

I can’t wait to hear AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” blaring over the PA system at Raider stadium and Michael Blankenship Memorial Stadium before an East or West Carter football game, or the smack of the volleyball by the Lady Raiders and Lady Comets, or the smell of the fresh cut grass just before a soccer game.

And we cannot forget the cross country and golf teams, as they get ready for their seasons as well.

For sports fans, the beginning of the season is like Christmas morning. We cannot wait to go running down the steps, pushing siblings out of the way to get a front row seat in front of the tree. It is the same for the first game or meet for all of the sports teams.

And let us not forget the excitement around Kentucky Christian University and its fall sports teams.

The excitement and culture change around the football program and new Coach Gene Peterson is something that cannot go ignored. Their preseason practices resume this weekend to get ready for the 2013 campaign.

Add the golf teams, the cross-country teams to the mix and it is certainly an exciting time for fall sports in the region.

These teams also need support. They work very hard to bring championships to the programs and without support of the school and the community, it can be very challenging. I do look forward to seeing as many people as possible come out to games and matches this upcoming season.

So I am impatiently waiting for the third week of August where things go from a crawl to 100 miles per hour with the rush toward glory.

The key word is, impatiently.
