May 15, 2013 —     The East and West Carter track and field teams competed in the Region 6 Class 2A meet this past weekend at Rowan County Senior High School in Morehead.

The Raiders had a few members qualify for the state track meet this weekend at the University of Louisville.

Alex Napier won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.30 and automatically qualified. Dustin Sexton won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.63 seconds. Ben Napier placed third in the 800-meter run posting a 2:05.99 and qualified as one of the next 10 best times in the state.

Alex Napier, Ben Napier, Dustin Sexton  and Brandon Neace placed second and automatically made it to state in the 4x800 with a time of 8:22.64, which is a new school record and second best time on the performance list for the state meet on Friday. They also placed in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:37.25.

The Lady Raiders will send two members of their track team to the state meet. Shayla Henderson qualified after winning the long jump after a jump of 15-5.75, a second place finish in the 200-meter dash at 28.70 seconds and finished third in the high jump at 4-foot-8.

Macy Dyer qualified for the 100-meter hurdles after posting a second place finish with a time of 18.07 seconds. She also finished second in the 300-meter hurdles with a 51.77 time. She also placed in the high jump, finishing sixth with a 4-foot-8 jump. Dyer will also compete in the triple jump where she qualified with a leap of 30-2.5.

Coach Carla Myers is over the moon having two of her members qualify in multiple individual events.

“They’re both very self driven and excellent students and they’re the kind of kids that will do anything you ask and you don’t have to worry about them at all,” Myers said. “It’s unreal for a student to get in one individually but for them to go in three or four events, it’s just amazing. It’s just something you don’t hear about very often.”

While West Carter did not have any state qualifiers, they had several top four finishes. Dallen Dean finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time 17.85 seconds. Jacob Nunley finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 39-feet.  Chyeanne Smith finished third in the shot put with a throw of 26 feet and fourth in the discus with a launch of 67 feet and 7 inches.
