KCU volleyball overall No. 1 seed

Nov. 13, 2013 — Kentucky Christian University’s Lady Knight Volleyball team is headed to the national championship as the overall No. 1 seed.

While Coach Bruce Dixon has gone to the National Christian College Athletic Association Division II Championship Tournament for each of the past six seasons, and a few times prior to that, no team from the Mid-East Region has ever been selected as the overall top team in the field.

For the past several years, Clearwater Christian College of Clearwater, Fla., has been the favorite, on the backs of their numerous consecutive championship wins. But Clearwater has faltered just a bit this year, giving the selection committee an opportunity to award another team the top seed.

“This is by no means an indication that Clearwater Christian is going to be easier to defeat than in years past,” said Dixon. “They are a strong program with a history of winning the last match of their season. There are several teams equally deserving of the prime spot in the tournament bracket. Anyone in the tournament could have a great weekend and win this thing.”

The tournament seeding is as follows: 1. Kentucky Christian University (Grayson); 2. Clearwater Christian University (Clearwater); 3. Lincoln Christian University (Lincoln, Ill.); 4. Manhattan Christian College (Manhattan, Kansas); 5. Cairn University (Langhorne, Pa.); 6. Maranatha Bible College (Watertown, Wisc.); 7. Arlington Baptist College (Arlington, Texas); 8, Ozark Christian College (Joplin, Mo.); 9. Providence University College (Otterburne, Manitoba, Canada); and 10. West Coast Baptist College(Lancaster, Calif.). Maranatha Bible College and Ozark Christian College were selected as “at-large” teams for the event, each of their others earned their berths as Regional Champions.

The tournament is being played at Lincoln Christian University in southern Illinois. Tournament play begins on Thursday with two pools of five teams. KCU will play the following schedule: Thursday, 1 p.m. – Providence University College; Thursday, 6:30 p.m. – Cairn University; Friday, 11 a.m. – Ozark Christian University; Friday, 5 p.m. – Manhattan Christian College.
