Bates' Crazy 8

By MacKenzie Bates - Sports Editor

June 5, 2013 — Baseball:

1. Ashland (26-9)

2. Greenup County (24-13)

3. Bath County (21-10)

4. Rowan County (19-18)

5. Lewis County (27-11)

6. Boyd County (19-17)

7. East Carter (18-17)

8. Morgan County (18-10)

Time to give credit where credit is due. Kudos to the Ashland Tomcats (and the arm of Logan Salow) for repeating as the 16th Region Champions as they defeated Greenup County 9-4 to play at the state tournament.

It was definitely earned after back-to-back 1-0 ball games in the first two rounds against Lewis and Rowan counties.

The Vikings turnaround this season was remarkable. After starting 2-12, Rowan finished 17-6 in just six weeks of play. After losing four seniors, the Vikings will have plenty in the cupboard to compete once again for a 16th Region Championship.

1. Ashland (25-9)

2. Russell (17-15)

3. Boyd County (25-12)

4. Greenup County (19-18)

5. East Carter (24-12)

6. West Carter (12-14)

7. Menifee County (13-19)

8. Rowan County (22-16)

The Kittens continued their dynasty this past week of winning the 16th Region Tournament, winning its fifth straight crown to make the 294-mile trip to Jack C. Fisher Park in Owensboro for the state tournament. McKenzie Vanover was as good as advertised, hitting homeruns to ensure Ashland victories. Good luck to them as they will face Magoffin County later this week.

This will be the last installment of the Crazy 8 Rankings until football season. I hope you all enjoyed them (or hated them) as much as I have!
