East girls and Napier make cut for state cross country meet

By Grant Stevens - Sports Editor

Nov. 7, 2012 — There is no better place to be young, athletic and full of energy than in a race which requires all three.

The East Carter girls cross country team, along with Ben Napier of the boys bunch, proved this point at Saturday’s Regional Cross Country meet at Mason County, with the girls taking home a top-four finish, while Napier qualified individually.

After making the cut last year, the Lady Raiders endured their way to another appearance in this year’s state meet in Lexington.

Soccer season may be over for junior dual-sport participant Macy Dyer, but she pressed forward by furthering her success on the course.

Dyer finished second behind Mason County’s Rheagan Sizemore, with a finishing time of 20:23.

Other finishing times for the Lady Raiders included an 11th place finish for senior Cady Chaffin, 21:31, Delancey Morse 12th, 21:36, Madison Dyer 15th, 21:36, Kirstian Jordan 25th, 23:23, Megan Suttles 26th, 23:24, and Shayla Henderson 30th, 23:50.

West Carter also had a lone female runner in Saturday’s regional meet with Kaylee Johnson gutting out a 29th-place finish with a time of 23:34.

While West Carter did not have a boys team competing in this year’s region, East Carter had five make the trip to Maysville.

Though his team did not make the final cut for the state meet, Napier was able to qualify for the state competition with a 22nd-place finish, crossing the finish line at 18:57.

Aaron Williams finished 29th for the Raiders with a time of 19:46, Izak Flannery finished 33rd, 29:00, Alex Napier 34th, 20:01, and Fenner Morse 40th, 21:28.

Delancey Morse, Chaffin and Macy Dyer also made the All-Regional Team.

Following the successful outing, the Lady Raiders, along with boys’ individual qualifier Ben Napier, will make their way to the Kentucky Horse Park this Saturday in Lexington for the 2A State Cross Country meet.

Dyer will be the highest-ranking East Carter participant headed into Saturday’s race at 24th, with an average 5K time of 20:23 on the season.
