East, West play well at Jack Fultz Classic

Nov. 27, 2013 — Olive Hill was the place to be this past Saturday as the annual Jack Fultz Classic brought several teams to West Carter to play five games of preseason basketball. There were four, eight-minute quarters and the score would reset after each period.

Both East and West Carter’s boys and girl’s basketball teams participated in the event.

On the girl’s side of things, East Carter would use timely shooting and solid defense to defeat Bourbon County 69-25. The Lady Raiders were led in scoring by freshman Kristen Mayo’s 16 points.

East girls coach Hager Easterling said he liked what he saw for the first scrimmage of the season.

“It’s November and we’re just like every other team right now,” Easterling said. “It’s early and when you play somebody else, you get a chance to see what we need to get better at and we did that.”

Mayo was one of three Lady Raiders in double figures. Fellow freshman Haley Hall had 13 points and junior Megan Stickler had 13.

One area Easterling was not too pleased with was his team’s performance at the freethrow line. East Carter was 17-30.

East Carter’s boys would take the floor after their counterpart against Ripley, Ohio.

The Raiders got 19 points out of senior Connor Greene as the Raiders defeated the Blue Jays 53-44.

East Carter boys coach Brandon Baker made some adjustments at halftime of their scrimmage and his players responded.

“We were going against a different face and a different jersey and I was happy with how we played,” Raiders coach Brandon Baker said. “We got comfortable with the game speed in the first half and it took us a while to get there. Once we settled in, we did okay.”

Things switched to host Comets in the late afternoon as West Carter’s girls hosted Ripley, Ohio. The Lady Comets used a balanced attack to pull away from the Lady Blue Jays 39-33. Morgan Berry and Bonita Easterling each had seven points.
