Saturday afternoon is a time to usually relax for high school students after a hard week of studies.
This was not the case for the West Carter Lady Comets, as it was all work and no play for the girls in maroon on senior day, defeating visiting St. Pat, 2-0, in the regular season finale.
The win marked the Lady Comets eighth of the season, doubling its total from last year. Saturday’s victory also initiated a successful sendoff for three Lady Comet comrades, Julia Duncan, Tayla Steele and Amber Buckley.
West Carter Head Coach Sandra Brown spoke highly of her senior trio.
“Julia, Amber and Tayla have been big contributors in the growth of this program over the past few years,” Brown said. “They show so much fight and determination, and contribute a lot both offensively and defensively for us. Most of all, I think this team will miss the fight and determination they bring to the table each and every night.”
It may not have been a spectacular offensive showing for the Lady Comets, but fear of a loss was never in question.
On the scoring side of things, junior Tesla Henderson and sophomore Erika Kitchen made sure their senior teammates had a good weekend, scoring the two goals needed for West to get the win.
Junior keeper Gabby Bond also contributed in the effort, guarding the nets for the shutout.
Set to play Greenup County last night after press time in the first round of the 62nd District Tournament, Brown appeared confident in her team.
“Ultimate goal for our team this postseason is that we want to continue to learn and improve our defense in preventing goals, and also add to our offense,” Brown said. “As a young program compared to others in our area, I feel we are making strides each year in becoming a competitive team. We are excited about district play.”
