Locals compete in zone championship

March 27, 2013 — Trinity Boggs of Grayson, swimming for the Ashland Area YMCA-Barracudas swim team, qualified for the YMCA Great Lakes Zone Championships in five events.

Boggs, who swims in the 11-12 age group, qualified in the 50-meter freestyle, 50 butterfly, and 100 freestyle. Trinity also qualified in the 200 freestyle relay as well as the 200 individual medley relay with teammates Starla Wilson of Rowan, Samantha Patrick of Rowan, and Lindsey Seaton of Russell.

The Zones Championships are based on times received during the YMCA State Championships with several states comprising the Great Lakes Zone.

“Trinity has done something very special to qualify in five events at such an elite competition. Trinity along with her teammates in the relay are very gifted young ladies that are a pleasure to coach,” said Ashland YMCA swim coach Ryan Ferguson.

Trinity comes from a swim family comprising her sisters Cheyenne (16) and Layla (7) who also took numerous medals home during the YMCA State Championships.

“Layla won high points in her age group, and Cheyenne is a super fast swimmer that works so hard. She pushes me to be better and was my biggest cheerleader during my events. We help each other, and I think that’s why we have been pretty fast over the years,” said Trinity. “I love my relay team. We are such good friends and this has been something we are all excited for and have been in extra training to get ready to do our best. We want to show some of these bigger teams that we got a little something for them."

The zone meet was held March 15 through 17 at Bowling Green State University's Cooper Pool. Trinity and her team mates medaled in the 200 freestyle relay. Trinity ended up beating all of her best times and was the highest finisher from the State of Kentucky.

"This was an extremely successful showing for such a young lady at her first ever Zone Championship," said Coach Ferguson. “We are here competing against the elite of the elite in major swim states such as Michigan and Ohio. Trinity has had an amazing season and I look forward to watching all she accomplishes in her swim career."
