Cardiac Comets: West baseball wins first district title since 1991

May 28, 2014 — Just call ‘em the Cardiac Comets.

And, for the first time since 1991, call ‘em the 62nd District champions, too.

West Carter trailed host Morgan County 1-0 with two outs in the seventh inning before getting a game-tying RBI single from Ben Jordan.

Three batters later, Jordan scored from third on an error for a 2-1 Comets walk-off victory in the district final at Joe Stacy Recreational Complex.

The Comets (20-7) have won three of four meetings with the Cougars (11-18) this year, but three of those games have been decided by two runs or fewer, including Morgan County’s victory in the 16th Region All “A” Classic final.

“They’re kind of our nemesis,” West Carter Coach Tim Johnson said. “They’re the one team that we can’t just go out and beat. It’s a battle every game.”

Added Jordan: “They’re so scrappy. It’s the scrappiest team. It’s hard to play with Morgan. Their enthusiasm is always high. They’re smart and they play hard.”

Jordan threw six innings of one-run, five-hit ball, striking out 10 Cougars and walking zero. Richard McGlone pitched a perfect seventh to earn the win, but …

“Ben gets the decision in my book. He threw the heck out of it tonight. Did an excellent job,” Johnson said. “Throws the ball extremely hard, great changeup, great curveball. He was wearing ‘em out.

“And then the big key was, when you come in behind Jordan, it’s tough to pitch behind him. You got a kid out there throwing it around 90 and then anybody else is gonna look like meat, but Richard came in and threw the ball extremely well, kept it at the knees and had them off balance up there as well and shut the door on them.”

Kye Potter was Morgan County’s hard-luck loser. He limited the Comets to one hit in their first five innings and went 6 2-3 frames, allowing four hits, walking four and fanning eight.
