East Carter claims 62nd softball title

May 28, 2014 — East Carter eighth grader Montana Fouts doesn’t fear the spotlight.

The right-hander nearly put together a perfect game inside the pitching circle in the 62nd District championship game against West Carter on Tuesday at Elliott County High School.

The Lady Raiders won 2-0, giving them their second consecutive district title.

Fouts tallied 12 strikeouts and no walks.

For the third consecutive outing, Fouts lost a no-hitter with two outs in the seventh inning.

Just one out away from completing perfection, Fouts gave up a swinging bunt hit to Leatha Reynolds. The Lady Comet senior tapped the ball just a few feet in front of home plate and beat out the throw for an infield single.

“(Fouts) was outstanding,” said East Carter Coach Derek Calhoun. “She was hitting her spots well, and threw a variety of pitches against them. When she’s on and hitting the corners, she’s very hard to hit.”

Whitney Hall provided the offensive fireworks. She slammed a solo home run over the center-field fence in the bottom of the first. She also scored a run in the fourth on a Jordyn Wiler single.

Reynolds pitched for West Carter. She allowed just three hits and struck out nine.

Calhoun’s team improved to 28-5. West Carter fell to 7-15.

Both advanced to the 16th Region Tournament, which started Monday.

“We’re very proud to do that,” Calhoun said. “We’re glad to represent this district as the winner. But we know what’s ahead of us. It doesn’t matter who we play (in the region tournament), we have to be ready to play.”
